Thanks for the info about Murf. He was definately a wealth of information on many subjects. Being a Mech Eng myself I very much liked his explanation of different questions.

I have also been wondering where Roger Loving has been. He was on the same level as Murf.

The Deere PTO does have a brake but it is made in such a way that when the PTO is off it can be rotated approx 180deg to allow for hookup of misalligned splines.

Roger,
In visualing the front end coming over on a tractor while plowing remeber that the majority of large plows(4 bottomor more) are what is called semi-mount. Meaning they are only attached to the lower links and the tail of the plow is lifted by a trailing wheel. There is no upper link, making it easy to lift the front of the tractor.

Matt,
My 4200 has about 60 hours on it and it has gotten much better in the last 20. But for a tractor these are really no hours at all and I wouldn't consider it broken it for at least another 100. I have tried letting out the clutch in nuetral and even letting out the clutch slightly while trying to push it in gear and nothing helped. As far as the tractor pointing downhill, the oil would be draining into the clutch housing from the transmission and wetting them even more. I think that is why the problem worsens. Randy

I cannot comment on the Kubota but I do have a JD 4200. It is by no means underpowered. It will mow as fast as you can stand to be bumped around and spin the tires in 4WD in over half of its gears. The only time it feals lacking is in road gear pulling a trailer up a hill. The best advice is to drive each one and, as Roger says, get on and off a couple dozen times. You will be getting on and off more than you imagine. Mine does have a cup holder. I've used it at least twice in the last two years. It is a nice thought though.
One other thing to compare, have a dealer remove and reattach the implements you plan to buy. You will do this more than you think also.

I was introduced to rear blades while working on a farm years ago. The blade we used had offset and tilt options. I found the offset to be invaluable for getting the material being bladed past the rear tires. When I purchased my compact last year I knew one project was going to be building a blade for it and offset was requirement. I finished the blade last week and just in time for some snow plowing. It has hydraulic offset with a neat little concept I came up with on my own that I will try to describe since I think you will find it interesting. The offset is the type where the main beam pivots between the three point hitch pins. On the right side of the pivot is where the cylinder mounts. On the left side I ran a telescoping link from the three point mounts back to the blade parallel with the main beam. The telescoping lind has holes for the different angles of the blade. This way I set the angle of the blade with the link then as the cylinder offsets the beam the blade stays at the same angle with respect to the tractor. I know that was wordy so if I can I will take a picture and post if. Randy

I'll give the explanationa a try.
Picture the upper cylinder mount for bucket curl not welded to the booms but instead being pinned to the booms so it can pivot. Then, a rod from that mount back to the upright masts. This way as the loader raises the rear rod hold the cylinder mount in the same relative position with respect to the upright masts. It is similar to a double wishbone suspension keeping the wheels of a car perpendicular with respect to the frame.

First, my posts are always meant to be laced with some humor, if you knew me you would understand. I also didn't intend offense to be taken. To me it is somewhat humorous for a dealer of a brand to post when someone is asking which of two tractors are better. You, of course, are going to lean toward Kubota and a JD dealer will lean toword JD. To do otherwise would be like pulling a Barney Fife and shooting yourself in the foot. The point of my first post was only to say that when someone asks the question of which is better they need to understand loyalties of the person who is replying, including myself. I have seen many very helpful posts from you in the past and hope you continue your contributions. Hopefully little wiser now, Randy Eckard.

Just one note of clarification, the 4100 hydro does not have a separate powersteering pump. It gets its flow from the Hydro tranny the same way the 55 series did. Whether this makes any difference or not I dont know.

I just the opposite experience when I was looking. The New holland dealer only wanted to sell me a hydro and told me no one would mow with a gear transmission. The JD dealer was willing to work with what I wanted.

I saw a neat idea a while back where someone mounted a light on each boom of the loader just above where the bucket tilt cylinders are mounted. As I recall he just used the adhesive backed base type and did no drillingat all. Just a thought.

I have a jd4200 and my Dad has a jd870. The 790 uses the same setup as these. It takes us both 5 min or less once you get the hang of it. Installation is the same.

One way I have found to lift 3ph implements with the loader is to put the cutting edge of the loader under the lower link pins/brackets, then put a pin through the top link mast and run chain around the bucket to pin you just put in(you will find that if you get a large enough chain/hook you can slip the hook over the cutting edge then the chain around the bucket). You will then find that when you curl the bucket back the chain tightens and lifts the implement up with the cutting edge carrying the load. This can be done with many other objects also once you understand where to place the cutting edge.
But always remember to stay clear of any object lifted no matter how confident you are of your means of attachment.

This is in response to the question of running a pto implement(generator) while off the seat. You can dismount the tractor with the REAR pto running if both the range shift lever and the gear shift are in nuetral. This does not work if the mid pto is engaged.
